12 angry teachers

I am amazed at the amount of internal political drama that can ensue at the talk and thought of a new principal. The school system assures that there is a process. And there is.

A principal selection committee is elected. People come out of the wood works to be on this committee. People who want to have a say, want to feel involved, or just want to have their hands in the pie. What should be a group of intelligent teachers and stakeholders, turns into (as with any election) a group of the people who campaigned the hardest.

Drama ensues.

Once the committee has been elected, these individuals interview the candidates and argue about them for several hours into the night for a few weeks.

Drama ensues.

After the committee slugs it out jury style and finally comes to a watered down decision, they send their recommendation for principal to the superintendent, who then chooses our principal at his or her whim.

And thus, the teachers do not choose the principal. The teachers get tricked. A diversion of power and drama is dangled before them as a distraction, the ruse is played out and

everybody wins?
