Tyler

This morning Tyler Hansborough was spotted at Open Eye Cafe by Jason. This covert snap-chat reminded of the time I not so covertly tried to snap-chat Tyler Hansborough at Open Eye Cafe last fall and he saw me. The snap was priceless! Unfortunately, I didn't screenshot it, but it looked something like this

Trail Races Are Fun!

This weekend I ran a 7k in the woods. The Philosopher's Way Race is one of my favorites in the area and it was a pleasure to run it this weekend!

Alton Brown

I had no idea who he was (until I googled him) and I'm sure many of the kids at Fayetteville Street didn't either, but Alton Brown came to our school!

This is him.

He did a cool science/culinary experiment that involved popcorn, exploding balloons and dried crickets.

Needless to say, the kids loved it and now we all know who Alton Brown is.

Popping popcorn with an extra hot lamp

Making culinary science jokes.
I didn't know it but he has his own show AND was on Iron Chef!

He's doing 2 shows at DPAC tonight and we got front row seats at Fayetteville Street Elementary.

Trying to emulate the chemical reaction that occurs when popcorn is popped. Inside the balloon is kale (for fiber), packing peanuts (for cellulose), and dried crickets (for protein).

This was right after he made that lady eat a dried cricket!

Heating up the "kernal"...this poor woman!

And...POP!

The best part was that Alton Brown stayed after the show and gave each child (over 300) and teacher a personalized autograph!

Thanks, Alton Brown!

Spring Break in Asheville

Last weekend, Jason and I took a little trip to Asheville for Spring Break. I found a cute little "Treefort Cottage" on AirBnB for us to stay in, which boasted itself as a premier "glamping"* option.  We had a great little weekend hanging out, drinking beer, drinking coffee, hiking, catching up with friends, and rooting for the Heels from a chain sports bar with 12,000 TVs.

Cheers from Wedge, Brewery

Yummy food and yummy beer from Wicked Weed

One of my favorite activities-fire and beer! I really love to zone out and stare at the fire...
Good Morning from our big bed in a tiny Treehouse Cottage.
Cortado and a book- another favorte activity

Ah, so pretty

Sierra Nevada Brewery, NC style! This place is a MUST!
Here we are with Derek and kids. This place is only 5 minutes from their house.

*A footnote on "glamping"- it's glamour + camping = glamping, and it's a great way to combine some of the great things about camping like fires and outside with some of the great things about staying in a hotel like a bed and warmth.  I'm still not sure though if it's just a way to get you to spend tons of money for a granny bed and a port-a-potty.  We did love our little tree house though...

To Care or Not to Care?

Caring about sports is a hard thing. It's an emotional roller coaster, really. Why would anyone put themselves through that?

Well, there is something about feeling a sense of community in rooting for one's team. Pride (and joy) in the representation of something that goes beyond just a game with a ball.  This year's UNC men's basketball team made me feel that more than any other sports team in my life. Go Heels! You might not have won this one, but you will always be winners to me.

On to the next one...

Communication

The only way I see my husband these days.

My jokes aren't as funny via Facetime.

I'd like to think this is what Jay-Z and Beyonce do when B is on tour.

So, yeah, it's pretty much like I'm Beyonce.

Back Home

I've been back home in NC for a week now. Despite the facts that I'm not actually settled in our house yet, I've  been extremely busy, I'm starting a new job at a new school, and I've hardly had time to tell up from down it still feels 100% g-r-e-a-t to be home.

Here's the sunset from the Durham Bulls game on Friday night to prove it:

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
