I'm Coming For You, Bey

The Charlotte Observer headline read "Beyonce turns storm-interrupted show into something beautiful".
I'm sure she did, Charlotte Observer, I'm sure she did. #lemonade #slay

If you don't know that I LOVE LOVE LOVE Beyonce, then you don't truly know me. It was all I could do to not say "F-it" to our newly established budget and purchase a last minute ticket to the show in Raleigh last night. Instead, I will have to wait until June 7th, when I got to New York and see her with my trinity sisters, which will be well worth the wait. Carrie, Bekah, and I will be in Formation for damn sure,

Girls on the Run...

...So much fun!

This past weekend was the Girls on the Run 5k. 2500 girls from around the Triangle participated in the 5k event. Some of them, like my team, ran their first 5K ever!

Running Career Back on Track

You can't imagine how good it feels to run a half marathon in your hometown on a beautiful, sunny Sunday morning in October after you haven't done a race in over year, especially after you only ran 8.8 miles for your longest training run.

It feels pretty great.

This was such a spectacular race. I might even say best half marathon ever. Not only was it fun and lovely and all that, but it was extremely well organized. I'd definitely do it again. Maybe I'll even make it an annual thing.

Fundraising?

Other than going door to door and selling wrapping paper in elementary school, I have very little experience fundraising. I fear that mostly this is due to the fact that I simply don't associate with people who have flush funds to donate, nor do I have enough time or funds on my own hands to consider those less fortunate than I.

There's a first time for everything. This year me and Jason are doing a little fundraising for our Hood to Coast relay team. We are charged with raising 700$ for the Portland Providence Medical Foundation in order to participate with our team this year in the race. PPMF does cancer research and also funds medical support for people who struggle financially.

We even have a donation website! Check it out here. Maybe you might even want to donate some money. It's for a good cause.

In exchange for your donations, the 12 of us will run 198 miles in about 30 hours. We will live a van and subsist on goldfish, peanut butter sandwiches, and Gatorade. We will not shower, though some us us might change our shorts. We will not sleep more than a few hours at a time. We will make crude jokes and annoy each other due to sleep deprivation. We will promise ourselves that this is the last year that we do this race. We will finish on the lovely Oregon Coast, eat pizza, drink beer,  have glorious sleeps and then before we even realize it, begin to plan next year's race.

Look how cute we are. Want to give us some money?

What I did today

1. Started Packing for Hawaii

Yes, we are going to Hawaii this Friday for a week. The cat is out of the bag. Well, there wasn't really a bag, but a few days ago Jason and I realized that we were going and we hadn't told anyone about it. Our short list of United States that we have not visited is about to go from five to four.

2. Chose a text book for the class I am teaching at U of O in the spring

I'm teaching a class on Multicultural Literacy at University of Oregon this spring term. It's secretly stressing me out because, like...now I'm teaching a college class??? Mostly, it's reminding me of how much I want to be back in a real ESL classroom, with real ESL students. And, why didn't I appreciate it when I had it?

Teacher Training Anniversary

Today is the official 1 year anniversary of the first day of my Bikram Yoga Teacher Training.  I lived, studied, and practiced in the LAX Radisson (which, hilariously, is now closed down!) with 315 crazy Bikram yogis (pictured below) for 9 weeks:

315 "would be Bikram Yoga teachers", as they called us

I can't believe it's been a year. I've taught 188 classes since November 20 when I taught my first. I've learned so much! The 9 week stay at teacher training was only the beginning. The life of an actual teaching teacher is the true training. Working with so many amazing teachers and students is the true training. Maintaining and growing in my practice is the true training. The training is a lifelong training, wherein we are all constantly learning and growing. We "continuously keep kicking".

Thank you, Bikram. You might be a nut, but you are a yoga genius too. Thank you.

"You are not proving how good you are. You are giving them something. You have to be compassionate. Then, you put nails in their ass" -Bikram (9/17/13)

Making Progress

Carolina Beach, NC- July 2011
Bikram Yoga Durham Demonstration, NC- May 2012
Oregon Coast- March 2013

Roberts' Lake House Dock, NC- June 2013

Mt. Scott Crater Lake, OR- August 2013

Malibu, CA- October 2013

Eugene, OR- January 2014
Grand Canyon, AZ- May 2014
I've done a lot of Standing Bow Pulling poses in my life thus far. Between the many yoga classes and traveling "take a picture of me in standing bow" indulgences, I can't even begin to count.
However, I can say that I'm making progress. I will straighten my leg. I promise.

Continuously Keep Kicking

Me and Boss (or Boss and I)

Here's my official graduation photo from Teacher Training.

Feels good to have accomplished this! I strangely miss it.

My photo turned out pretty good considering that 315 of these were snapped.
There are some with some pretty funny faces.

I'm doing it!

After being back from teacher training for only a couple of days, I taught my very first Bikram yoga class last Wednesday. For the most part, I think it went quite well. To quote some of our teachers from teacher training, I was "shitting in my pants". In case you don't know, that's a euphemism for being extremely nervous! There's a lot to think about: remembering the dialogue, looking at people, seeming confident, the heat, the humidity, timing, and inspiring people. But I got through it and the second and third classes were way better. It feels like I'm just going to keep getting better and better! So, now I am officially a Bikram Yoga teacher and I have the teacher cubby (pictured above) to prove it.

Week 9 and Graduation

As wonderful as the entire Teacher Training experience is, by week 9 I was definitely ready to go. The early mornings, late nights, hot temperatures, hundreds of people, and the sheer act of living in a hotel for 9 weeks all begin get to you.

Here is the perfect example:
On Thursday of Week 9, we were allowed to take pictures before and during class. I was very tired.

Who me? Oh, you know. Just sitting on the floor at the Radisson.

I can't believe we did it.
